By Jeremy Smithson The Ion Tailgater portable PA is a professional quality speaker system and can be used with a spread of inputs. Despite the fact that it is intended basically for the iPhone and the iPod, the speaker can be used just as effectively with musical instruments in addition to mp3 players. Styled to seem like a classic guitar amplifier, the Tailgater portable is highly portable and may be employed in the open or at a venue just as simply due to it's built in battery. Complete with an iPod dock and numerous inputs the Ion Tailgater Portable is without doubt the complete package.
It has a heavy duty and rugged but portable construction complete with a carry handle. It is just mono, but most portable docks are too small to really get stereo effects anyway. It has got a 2-way speaker design, with a 6" woofer and 1.5 inch 1.5" dome tweeter. The sole real drawback is that it doesn't have any bass adjustment and the default sound is a bit muddy, but this can be altered using the iPods EQ. As for volume, it can get loud. Even outdoors I rarely go past third of full volume. The Tailgater is compatible with a good assortment of musical instruments and mp3 players. What's more it is also compatible with CD and DVD players. The amplifier is designed with several inputs for the microphone and other devices and a high quality microphone with XLR connector is included with the package. One more great feature is that it works on both mains power and the built in chargeable battery pack. Battery life is stated as being eight hours at two thirds volume according to the book. We haven't been able to fully test it yet, but at two thirds volume it ran for 3+ hrs and the battery display still lit up three out of four LEDs! Therefore there is no actual doubt that the 8 hour claim is achievable which is awesome. Recharging takes about 4 hours and there is a handy battery level indicator to display the level of this battery charge. This excellent piece of hardware is an audio lover's dream. The heavy duty sound and the lightweight but craggy build quality make it a perfect amplifier for outside parties and performances. But that is not all. The PAcan be used in a venue just as well. The sound system has been widely appreciated by fans and critics alike. So to run through the Tailgater PA's main features: + portable iPod PA system that runs for eight hours on the in-built battery + actually loud enough to be worthwhile to use out of doors + 8 hour battery life + good sound quality + comes with a mic + works with iPhone and a range of different kit - no bass control, need to use iPod EQ to clean up audio output if you want to - stated twelve hour full recharge timefor the battery, just need to plan upfront for use The Ion Audio Tailgater is a pro quality amplifier system and can be employed with a spread of inputs. Though designed basically for the iPhone and the iPod, the speaker can be used just as easily with musical instruments as well as mp3 players. |
